With several posts about social media and the advantages of
having social profiles and how they can grow your real estate business. Is it
okay for someone to simply not like the social media craze that has erupted in
the real estate industry? Yes, and here is why.
First let me explain that I know several agents who obtain
leads from social media outlets and close transactions from them too. This is
not a post to degrade those who are socially literate, it is simply a post for
those who need to understand that social media strategies are not the solution
for ALL agents.
What Social Media cannot Take Away from the Real Estate Professional?
Real estate is still, and will always be, about the
relationships we build on every day. This is a principle of real estate and it
will not fade anytime soon. If your relationships are done through phone calls
or through social media posts, they are still build one word and one moment at
a time. When I teach in classes I tell my students that social media is to be
an extension of who you are. This means that you are to supplement your true
nature and personality with what you post on social media. If you are not doing
this or you are trying to separate who you are on your social profile it is
going against the core of the real estate relationships principle.
To Tweet or Not To Tweet, that really is the question…
Social media is also different in different places. I live
in Tucson and Facebook is still all the rage. I frequently travel to Los
Angeles where more direct or image heavy social networks are more popular.
Examples of these are Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat. If you are new to
social media and you take a webinar on the different social channels made
available to you which one would you choose? Your particular market may not be
a Twitter market, so why would you be on Twitter? This is where social media
managers would say “know your audience!” If your target market is on Twitter,
be on Twitter. If they are on Facebook, be on Facebook. If they are on Myspace,
find a new target market! Often times these local dynamics are missed with a
webinar that is directed for agents across the country. It is also a place
where agents typically get stuck in the mechanics of a social media stately
rather than using the network as it is intended – to communicate with other
people.
Typically webinars are more about the presenter showing off
their knowledge of different social accounts then actually giving you answers
that you can use immediately. Please note that a presenter should have
knowledge of social media accounts and this is just my opinion on the webinars
that I have attended in the past that were for real estate professional.
These are just a few of the reasons it is okay for real
estate professional to dislike and even not use social media in their business.
It is not a mandate that you have a social media profile, nor use your broker’s
tools that are strictly for social media purposes. As I wrote earlier, real
estate is and always will be about relationships. Additionally after Facebook,
which outlet does your local market use the most? If you cannot answer that
question then you should not be on social channels other than Facebook. Social
media channels will rise and fall, but relationships will always work as a
solid real estate strategy. Finally – Yes it is okay to not like and not use
social media for your real estate career!
