I read post all the time that give tips for social media marketing, I wanted to give you a high level view of exactly what social media is comprised of so you can have a better understanding and make the necessary adjustments in your marketing.
Social media has five main groups which should be used differently. These groups are social networks, social bookmarking, media sharing tools, blogging, and wikis.
Social networking
Social networking is basically a site where individuals can create profiles with the goal of interacting with other social profiles. Facebook and LinkedIn are examples of this. Marketing on these sites should be strictly profile to profile for real estate.
Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking are sites like Pinterest and Digg. These sites allow you to organize, share and store content. Marketing on these sites is done by producing good content that is targeted to wants and needs of your real estate customers. (Investment basics, tips on how to list, etc.)
Media Sharing Tools
People love to see images and videos on social networks, this is where media sharing tools come in. YouTube and Flickr are two great examples of media sharing tools. We use these in our content creation. Marketing with media sharing tools is one of the easiest, yet most underutilized ways for real estate professionals to market themselves. I am so passionate about this that I wrote an eBook that even gives 52 video title templates for agents. If more agents acted on these tools, they would see their sales skyrocket.
Blogging
Blogs began as web journals, but quickly adapted to fully functioning websites because of the search engine power they possess. Blogs today can include videos, audio, images, and even interactive conversations. Blogging is either the best or second best (behind video) way to increase your exposure online. For real estate, you can showcase your professionalism, answer questions, and portray yourself as a community expert. Two examples of blogging sites are WordPress and Blogger.
Wikis
We all know about Wikipedia which is a large wiki, but what are they really? These sites are places where you can create a profile and edit content on a website. These sites are often a place where people can collaborate on industry knowledge.
Because social media is basically about 10 years old, we are still using it as a term that covers all social outlets in terms of marketing. Social Media is here to stay, universities are now researching and teaching social media to this generations marketers. It is more about the analytics than ever before, which is why it is important to segment each group out. Each group has a different goal and a different function. Stop thinking that Facebook and Pinterest are the same, and definitely do not market to them the same way. Segment your marketing and see better results.
